I'm pretty confused by all of this so any advice is appreciated.ĮDIT - I'm not planning to tow anything, only worried about off-roading durability. For those of you that have Wildpeak SL's - have you run into any durability/puncture issues? How much importance should I be putting on the load rating? Or is the weight of the tire more indicative of the durability? For example, there are certain SL AT tires that are <40lbs and the others (Wildpeaks) where the SL weighs almost as much as the E load from other brands. Is it safe to assume that the SL Wildpeaks should have similar durability to the C load ATX? The Wildpeak's weigh 46.5 lbs in SL and the ATX's weigh 46 lbs in C load. Two of my top choices are the Falken Wildpeak AT3W and the General Grabber ATX (both in 265/70R17). It's not like they make the SL just for show for mall crawlers, right.? so I would assume that it should be built to be ridden off-road. If they make an AT tire in SL load, it's still an AT tire. My specific questions that I am trying to answer: The tire I am most interested in is the Falken Wildpeak AT3W and the SL weighs enough that I wouldn't want to go with the E load if I don't have to. Also, sounds like C and D rated tires would be a happy medium but those seem to be much harder to find in the stock size (265/70R17). and the other half say they would never run less than E for off-roading. load rating and people seem to be pretty split on it - half the people say E is total overkill for a 4runner/Tacoma/etc. Obviously I want tires that I will be able to take off-road without having to worry too much about punctures, but this will also be my daily driver and the vast majority of the driving will be on pavement. I want to be able to take my 4runner off-road but more for the purpose of exploring the wilderness rather than specifically wanting to ride difficult 4x4 trails. I've done a fair bit of research on tires and one thing I am hung up on is the load rating. I have a 22 ORP on order and it will be my first truck/off-road vehicle. You'll lose out on some performance vs the upgrade options, but won't have to deal with any increase in noise, however minimal. If noise is the biggest detractor from a more aggressive tire, than perhaps stay stock for now. I'll also play devil's advocate, and note that unless you'll be doing some rocky trails, your stock tires will be more than fine on forest roads. I think the question to ask yourself is: is better wet/snow/off-road performance and durability worth more to you than 1 or 2 decibels of noise at faster speeds with windows down? Are you concerned that driving will no longer be comfortable with that almost imperceptible increase? Under that scenario, I'd say noise increased maybe 3%. Maybe a very slightly perceivable difference with all windows down at 60 MPH+, but how often are you driving under that scenario? Can't comment on the Cooper AT3 or the General's, but I legitimately noticed zero difference between my SL Falken's and the stock HT's with the windows up. Sounds like you are mostly concerned about noise. Some problems are very common.īe as detailed as possible when asking about problems. When posting pictures, add a brief description in the comments.
