(Desktops depend on mains power, while laptops have onboard batteries to mitigate power issues.) Turning off Hybrid Sleep This option is the default setting for desktop computers. It is the opposite for laptops, which ship with it disabled. This can be useful for desktop computers, but not as much for a laptop. If a power failure occurs, Windows can restore your work from your hard disk drive. So that you can quickly resume your work. Hybrid sleep - a combination of sleep and hibernate. It puts any open documents and programs in memory and on your hard disk and then puts your computer into a low-power state. (This is like copying all open and running apps to media and shutting down, then reloading the saved apps and data on startup.)įor more information about Computer Power States, see the following document: The working context can be restored if it was stored on nonvolatile media. Some internal components remain powered so the computer can wake from input from the keyboard, LAN, or a USB device. This is to maintain the computer states when it goes into hibernation. In this state, the computer saves the contents of the volatile memory to a hibernation file. This mode uses the lowest level of power consumption, short of turning the computer off.

Unify looks most similar to Wave Link but offers much more fine-grained control. The fact that Unify has sound pads for intros and effects means it also works quite well as a software “Rodecaster Pro.” For example, you could use it to record both sides of a Zoom call and be able to feed audio into that call that would otherwise be tricky. This makes it appealing to more than just streamers. Rode has added the ability to record all your audio directly within the app, too. With Unify, you can pipe most things to most places, and then change the levels, or “mix” for each destination also. For example, you probably want your intro music to go out on the stream, but maybe you don’t want it in your headphones? Or maybe you want your audience to hear a YouTube video you’re playing, but not the music you’re streaming. Unify creates a couple of virtual audio interfaces on your PC and you can then control which app uses what, and where that sound goes. With Unify, you have a simple software solution that is similar to the routing matrices you find with the GoXLR, the BEACN Mix Create or Elgato’s Wave Link. The one thing that a lot of gamers and streamers really need isn’t so much a microphone – there are many options for that – it’s a reliable tool to route all the sounds in your stream, usually some mix of game sounds, chat, music and effects. Especially once coupled with the new Unify software. If you want a good USB dynamic option, this feels like a competitive choice for the price. While perhaps not quite as well rounded as something like the Shure SM7B or even Rode’s own Podmic, it feels cleaner than the Podcaster that it shares its physical appearance with. The XDM-100 has a more classic “dynamic” microphone sound. The NT-USB Mini sounds a shade “closer” by comparison. When tested side by side with its NT-USB Mini doppelganger, they do sound incredibly close, but to my ears the XCM-50 is a tiny bit brighter sounding. The XCM-50 has a bright sound that will work well for those in acoustically treated, or “softer” rooms. Which of the two might interest you most will depend on both your preferences and the room where you stream from. If you’re recording something live, such as a podcast, it’s also far simpler to turn down the volume on a physical gain dial than it is to figure that out later in your recording software. Both microphones are USB only (no XLR), which means you won’t need an audio interface to use them, and they have built-in headphone ports for latency-free monitoring. It’s helpful if you’re switching from a boisterous speaker to a soft-spoken one, say, or from a lullaby to an aria.
The app is free and works on iOS and Android devices. The app includes RGB color values for Sherwin-Williams paints, lists of coordinating colors for each paint, as well as the color strip you'd find them on in a hardware store. There's also a virtual painting tool, and multiple ways to explore all the Sherwin-Williams paint collections. Sherwin-Williams offers an app called ColorSnap Match, that allows you to upload an existing photo or take a new photo to find paint colors that match it. Here's where tech can really lend a hand.ĬolorSnap by Sherwin-Williams offers color matching from your phone's camera or photo library. If you'd like to match new paint to an old color, you'll likely need the help of more than just a paint chip. A difference in wall sheen can cause a color to look very different." "Even if you get a chunk of wall beside an outlet, it may not match the color and sheen in the middle of the wall where the TV was mounted. "Paint on walls fade over time and the sheen changes," Angela Kirkpatrick, a residential designer, notes. Even if you know a wall's original paint color, a new coat of paint might look off either because of color fading or loss of sheen. Like clothes, car colors and photos hung in sunlight, paint colors also fade over time. Things get trickier when paint matching is your goal. Still, virtual painting is a good way to narrow down your choices and help you decide between different looks.Īll this color picking is manageable if you're painting a brand new or well-primed wall. It's not a perfect system by any means, and the color and light settings on your computer monitor or mobile device will affect how you see the color. Sherwin-Williams, Valspar and Behr all have websites with virtual design studios where you can try paint on in an uploaded photo of your space. Many major paint manufacturers have websites and apps designed to help you choose a paint color. Once you know you desired color's value, you'll be able to find it in nearly every medium out there. The hex method of valuing color is used to communicate RGB values in computer programming, such as HTML. Typically electronic screens and monitors that emit light use RGB (red, green, blue) color values, while CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) values are the standard for printed materials like newspapers and magazines, which absorb light. The most common values for color are HEX, CMYK and RGB. Knowing those values for the shade you need can help you navigate sensors and apps, and match color accurately across brands. Flatter finishes work well in spaces like bedrooms and living rooms.Ĭolor translates to computer via a series of values. Often, higher gloss finishes are good for bathrooms, kitchens and rooms that see more moisture. A flat paint finish (like what you'll find on most paint chips) won't reflect as much light as a high-gloss sheen, so a flat finish tends to look a bit darker. Your paint's finish or sheen also makes a difference in how color is perceived. Intersecting walls might even look like different shades at the same time of day, if each wall receives a different amount of light from the room's windows. That's because your home's artificial and natural light play a role in how color appears. Take that same paint chip home and it could look totally different. In a home improvement store, you're likely looking at a paint chip under a display lit by a strong fluorescent light - very different from the light in your home. Light is one of the biggest factors affecting how color translates on your wall. With a little help from tech, you can confidently wield a paintbrush and add just the right hue to your home. Here to help are a handful of smart sensors and mobile apps. If you're trying to match an old color, it can get even more complicated. It's also easy to love a color in the store, but hate the way it turns out once it's on your wall. Staring at rows of colors in your local home improvement store, it's easy to feel overwhelmed with choices. Picking the right paint can transform your space. Maybe you've been staring at greige office walls for far too long, or you're moving kids into their own rooms or just want a new color for your living room. You're ready to give your home a refresh. Many of the world’s greatest and most decorated audio engineers use Pro Tools, across a wide variety of mediums. It’s not the most elegant, versatile, or cutting-edge software, but I truly believe that if you hope to make a living in audio, Pro Tools is the DAW to own. Regardless, chances are Pro Tools was used in some capacity during the creation of your favorite modern movie, television show or album. My home studio setup is based around an iMac with 32GB of RAM and Pro Tools, and can easily handle sessions with over 130 tracks, with dozens of process-intensive plugins.Īlthough Pro Tools has evolved a lot over the decades, it still leaves much to be desired in terms of advanced features and stock capabilities. Pro Tools - originally called Sound Tools when it was released in 1989, is now available in three formats: Pro Tools First (a good starting point for beginners), Pro Tools (a great choice for most home studios), and Pro Tools Ultimate (which you’ll find in commercial and professional studios). Because of this, Pro Tools is compatible with most modern software (plugins, virtual instruments) and hardware (interfaces and controllers, etc.) There’s something to be said about the concept of an “Industry Standard”, and while many of the DAWs that I will cover later in this article are superior to Pro Tools in certain ways, Pro Tools handles enough tasks extremely well to have become the Industry Standard. Most professional studios I’ve worked out of or have visited use Pro Tools as their main DAW, with very few exceptions. I would go as far as saying that if you hope to have a career in audio that Pro Tools is the one DAW that is a must-own. Because of this, Pro Tools is the DAW that I use the most and am the most comfortable with. Most of my audio work is in recording, editing and mixing for music and post-production. Hopefully, this overview of the many DAWs currently available on the market can help you make informed decisions if you’re thinking of purchasing a DAW. There are subtle, and not-so-subtle differences in appearance, workflow and stock capabilities between each of them, and the goal in choosing a DAW is finding one that you feel comfortable with and trust. Having gained experience using virtually every DAW over the past two decades, I can honestly say that there is no objectively best choice. There are so many options when choosing a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and purchasing the one that’s right for you can prove to be a daunting task. A moka pot is quite different and features a triple chamber design. As the water boils at the bottom, it rises up and through the pump stem to cover the coffee grounds. The coffee percolator features one large chamber with a basket for coffee grounds and a pump stem. But there are major distinctions between the brewing process each machine employs and the cup of coffee each device produces. How Does the Moka Pot Work?īecause both use a stovetop, some people confuse the moka pot with the coffee percolator. A Bialetti Moka Express sits in the Museum of Modern Art as a shining example of early 20th century Italian style and design.ĭid You Know: The French press was also patented by Italians? It also comes in a variety of cup sizes so that you can make anywhere from one cup to six cups of coffee at a time. One of the reasons that coffee drinkers love the moka pot is that it's easy to use. To this day, coffee lovers everywhere use the stovetop moka pot as an easy and effective way to brew espresso at home. Known as the Moka Express, Bialetti’s original aluminum pot became a huge success, eventually finding its way into 90% of all Italian homes.Īt that time, the Italian coffee culture revolved around drinking cups of espresso in public coffeehouses. The moka pot dates back to 1933 when Italian engineer Alfonso Bialetti came up with the original design as a way to brew excellent coffee at home. Here’s our brew guide to making stovetop espresso in a moka pot. With a moka pot that fits on one burner on your stove, you can make a great cup of espresso every morning, every night, or whenever the mood strikes. The good news is that there is a third option:
He gets the girl, lands a job (with the Yankees), and moves away from his mother and father. George decides to do everything he wouldn’t normally do, and his luck changes for the better. Hear a familiar voice? That’s Larry David sputtering, “Someone tell me what she said! What did she say?” “The Opposite” Kramer doesn’t appear because, at the time, he supposedly never left his apartment. Yada, Yada: The episode is a rarity in that it unfolds on a single set and in real-time. After all, it’ll just be 5 or 10 minutes, right? That’s the whole premise. Jerry, George, and Elaine head out to a Chinese restaurant without a reservation. “No soup for you!” is the episode’s classic line. Yada, Yada: Jerry and Newman actually get along for a few seconds, which is the Seinfeld equivalent of the Eagles reuniting or the brothers from Oasis not yelling at each other. Amusing B-stories include Elaine’s pursuit of an armoire and Jerry and George’s interactions with their respective girlfriends, all of which eventually intersects with the Soup Nazi storyline. Elaine refuses to play by the rules, infuriating the Soup Nazi, and George almost makes it through, at least until a lack of bread proves to be his undoing. Anyone who doesn’t simply order their soup and properly pay is admonished, refused soup or banished. The proprietor of the hot new soup kitchen is so prickly that customers refer to him as The Soup Nazi. Series creator Larry David won an Emmy for writing “The Contest.” Also in the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode “Shaq,” Shaquille O’Neal plays a fictionalized version of himself who is obsessed with this episode. The iconic line, “Master of my domain” originated in this episode. Yada, Yada: Estelle Harris makes her first appearance as George’s mom, Estelle. The rest of the episode follows our favorite quartet as they bet on themselves not doing THAT. She had a Glamour magazine sitting around and, well, you know the rest. Jerry asks George, “What’s wrong?” George, as only George can, explains, “My mother caught me.” Yes, caught him doing THAT. It starts simply with Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer at the diner. Giddy-up! “The Contest”įor our money, this is the single funniest of all Seinfeld episodes. They’re not all the best, but those ones you must see. That’s why the pilot and the finale, the former of which is fine and the latter of which is meh, are on the list. Please note, we’re including both some of the best episodes, but also a few essential ones, too. To mark Seinfeld’s imminent arrival on Netflix, Fatherly is here with our thoughts on the 13 essential episodes of Seinfeld. And that continued for years, with Seinfeld ultimately running for nine seasons before calling it quits in 1998. Though we’re used to limited-run seasons now ( Loki) It’s hard to imagine such a short TV season back in the day, but by 1991, Seinfeld became must-see TV, with fans dissecting every episode, every joke. An NBC exec supported a pickup, and NBC ordered a four-episode first season. NBC didn’t elect to go to series with the show. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld’s show about nothing debuted inauspiciously in July 1989 with a single episode that hardly anyone watched actually, 15 million people tuned in, a massive number by today’s standards, but paltry at the time. But what are the episodes you should actually watch? What are the best Seinfeld episodes? Which are the most essential, and series-defining moments? Netflix spent a whopping, even sponge-worthy $500 million for the rights to stream Seinfeld, and all 180 featuring Jerry and the gang (Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards) will debut on October 1, 2021. |
